Insurance groups for new Abarth Punto Evo and Abarth 500C revealed

Monday, June 28th, 2010

The insurance groups for the new Abarth Punto Evo and Abarth 500C have been revealed.

The industry has moved to a new 50-group system as a replacement for the previous 1-20 groups. To make comparison easier, I’ve included the Abarth 500 and Grande Punto in the table below:

Car Group
Abarth 500 26
Abarth 500C 27
Abarth 500 esseesse 28
. . . . . .
Abarth Grande Punto 30
Abarth Punto Evo 32
Abarth Grande Punto esseesse 34

Given its fabric roof, the Abarth 500C compares well with its tin-top brothers, while the Punto Evo comes in at about where we’d expect, given its power and price increases.

500 Abarth insurance groups

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

The insurance groups for the 500 Abarth and 500 Abarth Esseesse have been announced by the ABI. They are:-

Model Group (1-20) Group (1-50) Group Type Security
500 Abarth T-Jet (135) 13 26 U T2
500 Abarth Esseesse T-Jet (155) 14 28 U T2

The ‘T2’ Security rating translates as:

An immobiliser that has been judged to comply to the Thatcham criteria.

That means the 500 Abarth isn’t fitted with an alarm, just an immobiliser. That’s the same as the Grande Punto Abarth.

Somewhat more concerning, though, is the ‘U’ group type, which translates as:

Cases where the level of security for the model concerned is regarded as Unacceptable. This does not mean that the car will be uninsurable but consumers should be aware that individual insurers may insist on the security being upgraded before providing cover.

That could mean many insurers will insist on having the optional alarm fitted when the car arrives at the dealers.  I hope Abarth UK have a few in stock…

Grande Punto Abarth insurance

Friday, July 25th, 2008

The insurance groups for the Grande Punto Abarth have been finalised by Thatcham. They are:-

Model Group (1-20) Group (1-50) Group Type Security
Grande Punto Abarth T-Jet 15 30 D T2
Grande Punto Abarth SS T-Jet 17 34 D T2

What does all this mean? Well, the ‘D’ Group Type means:

Does not meet the security requirement for a car of this type and the group rating has therefore been increased. (e.g. A group 9 car where the security requirement is not up to Thatcham’s minimum standard for that group will be listed as a 10D.)

Oh dear. The ‘T2’ Security rating translates as:

An immobiliser that has been judged to comply to the Thatcham criteria.

It’s likely that the GP Abarth’s lack of a factory-fitted alarm has cost it at least one place in the insurance groups. That said, I was able to obtain some pretty reasonable insurance quotes by hunting around – More Than came out on top, with a quote of £286.06 (for reference, I’m 30-odd, living in Surrey).
